Past simple

The ocean temperature increased slightly between 1950 and 2000.
In 1900, fresh foods showed higher sales than processed foods.

Use the past simple to talk about things that started and ended in the past. If something started in the past but hasn't finished yet, you should use the present perfect.
It doesn't matter how long ago something happened. Whether it finished long ago or recently, you should use the past simple. For example:

In 1350, the world population was around 370 million. [past simple]
In 2010, the world population was around 7 billion. [past simple]
