C (Office Memos and Notices)

Questions 17 — 21 refer to the following memo, e-mail, and form.

Date: November 18
To: All Staff
From: Katherine Lima, HR Director
Subject: Commuting Survey

As you may already be aware, the city government has recently adopted new Employee Commute Options (ECO) rules. These rules are part of a larger city plan to reduce air pollution as well as road congestion. The ECO program requires companies with l 00 employees or more to provide incentives for employees to carpool, take public transportation, or otherwise use alternatives to driving alone. To comply with the new regulations, at least 60 percent of employees must complete a survey about their commuting habits. We will be conducting this survey next week. We aim to achieve a l00 percent response rate.

As the rules require, we will use the results to produce a "trip reduction plan"-a plan to reduce the current number of driving trips to and from our workplace by at least l O percent. The plan will involve incentives such as subsidized transit cards, ride-sharing programs, free secure bicycle parking, rewards for walking to work, and telecommuting options.

Every employee will receive the survey by e-mail on Monday, November 21. It is an online PDF form, so there is no need to print it. The survey takes only five minutes or less to complete. I ask that you fill it out and e-mail it to me at klima@stormelectronics.com by the end of the day on Tuesday, November 22. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Subject: Commuting Survey

Hi, Katherine.

My survey form is attached, and I'm very interested to see the results and the plan that the company produces. I’d certainly prefer to spend less time driving if it were more practical, and I know I'm not alone. It was especially encouraging to see you mention telecommuting in the memo. Does this mean that management might finally be changing its mind on that issue? That would be excellent news.

Besides the survey, is there any other way for employees to contribute to the planning process? Is there a committee working on it already? Because if there's a need for volunteers, I'd be happy to join in.

All the best,

Adam
