Taking The TOEIC Skills and Strategies 2 (Chapter 3: Reading Practice)

E (Text Message and Instant Message Chains)

Questions 14 — 16 refer to the following instant message chain.

Lee King:  | 5:50 p.m.
Sorry I missed the staff meeting yesterday evening. How did it go? Did they change the dress code?

Grace Meng:  | 5:51 p.m.
No, we still can't wear jeans. But management is considering a new policy. They want to make a rule against employees reading while they're on duty.

Kevin Pratt:  | 5:51 p.m.
Apparently, they think that employees ignore customers when they read.

Grace Meng:  | 5:51 p.m.
One or two people have complained about that. But sometimes business is slow. What are we supposed to do then?

Lee King:  | 5:52 p.m.
Yeah, and it's good for customers to see us enjoying our own products. This is a bad idea.

Grace Meng:  | 5:53 p.m.
I couldn't agree more. Often a customer notices what I'm reading and asks about it. That leads to sales.

Kevin Pratt:  | 5:54 p.m.
Anyway, it hasn't been decided. We'll find out at next Monday's meeting. I'm going to write an e-mail to management explaining why we're against it.

Grace Meng:  | 5:55 p.m.
There was some good news from the meeting too, though. From now on, we get 40% off all books, and 30% off coffee and snacks.

Lee King:  | 5:57 p.m.
Excellent! That will save me so much money.
